      ZhanJiang Ocean University (ZJOU) was established on Jan.10,1997. It is located at Huguangyan, the famous scenic lake at the outskirts ofthe port-city of ZhanJiang in southeastern Guangdong Province. Theuniversity incorporates the former 63 - year-old Fisheries Instituteand the 39-year old Agricultural College of ZhanJiang.ZJOU is a multi-disciplinary ocean university with marine and aquatic sciences asthe leading subjects and science,engineering, agriculture, economicsand management as su- bordinated disciplines. In addition to the maintask of providing college- degree education, ZJOU also offerspostgraduate degree courses. The applied sciences specialities arethe dominant disciplines while the basic course subjects aresubordinated to these. ZJOU is one of the universities designated askey projects in Guangdong Province and the total enrolment of full-time students will amount to 8,000 in the year 2000 and to 10,000 by2010.

       Covering a grassland area of over 300 hectares,ZJOU offers an idealand peaceful environment for study and work. A teaching building of30,000sqms and student dormitories of 23,000sqms are completed andoccupied while a modern multi-functional library will be built soon.So far,the total area of campus structures covers 250,000sqms. ZJOUcomprises three institutes (Aquatic, Engineering and Agricultural) ,one college (Adult Education) and one department( Economy and Trade)directly under its authority.Preparations are made for a navigation,an economy and trade,and a sci-tech institute. ZJOU offers more than30 specialised courses in aquaculture; marine fishing science andtechnology;marine engineering; thermal energy and power engineering;machine design; manufacture and automation;navigation; food scienceand processing;architectural environment and facilities; electronicinformation engineering; computer science and technology; economics,agronomy; zoology; horticulture and economic management etc.

       In addition, ZJOU also offers two master degree programmes inaquaculture and in aquatic products processing and preservationengineering,respectively.These two branches, as well as the subjectof marine pharmaceuticals , are designated as key disciplines inGuangdong Province and authorized to recruit students from abroad.The total number of students, coming from all parts of the country,has reached 7,000 and the faculty, including 150 professors andassociate professors, totals 1,100.

        ZJOU possesses advanced teaching-,research-and laboratory facilities,such as a comprehensive library, a computing centre, an analysis andtesting centre, electronic multmedia classrooms, audio- visuallaboratories besides various other well-equipped installations.Thereare also 14 organizations of scientific research, e.g. the SCI- TECHPark, the Institute of Marine Organisms, the Institute of MarineEconomy and Technology,the Research Section of Marine Pharmaceuticals, the Pearl Research Section (the only university research centre ofthis kind in China),and the Museum of Aquatic Organisms with morethan 3,000 specimens on display. ZJOU has also set up its ownteaching-,production-and training basis in freshwater and seawateraquaculture; it owns a fishingnet factory, two training fishingvessels and a machinery workshop. At the same time, ZOU cooperatesclosely with external enterprises for the training of its students.

       At all times,ZJOU has paid great attention to scientific research.A great many of the university's sci-tech research achievements havebeen applied and disseminated, and fine economic returns, as well associal benefits, have been obtained in the propagation of newtechnologies in pearl culture,fish and shrimp seedling and farming,and netcage culture. Furthermore,new methods of prevention and cureof fish diseases have been developed and breakthroughs in ricehybridization and the cultivation of fast-growing,high-quality strainsof bananas have been reached.

       Over the years, ZJOU has successfully established academic exchangeswith several foreign countries such as the USA, Japan and Australiaand with the regions of Taiwan,Hongkong and Macao. World- renownedscientists like Niu Manjiang,the Chinese-American biologist, Prof.Liu Jiangkang of the Institute of Aquatic Products under the ChineseAcademy of Sciences, and Prof. Suyama Michizo, the famous Japaneseaquaculture specialist, have been engaged as emeritus professors of ZJOU.

        Last but not least, ZJOU has formulated its own guidelines for academicdevelopment:1.give priority to the establishment of academic courses; 2. choose as main task the formation of a strong contingent ofhighly qualified teachers and 3. adhere firmly to the policy ofeducational and academic excellence. To realize these lofty aims,ZJOU strives to invite talents in a wide variety of fields to comeand work for the university. A Board of Trustees has beenestablished so as to draw fully on the experience of those far-sighted members of society who are sympathetic to the cause ofmarine sciences and education and not only willing topromote the gradual expansion of ZJOU, but also prepared to supportwhole-heartedly the process of continual upgrading of the quality ofteaching and research and the propagation and economic and social application ofresearch findings.
