Guangdong Ocean University is a residential university where international language students, undergraduates and graduates have much to offer and to learn from each other. GDOU enrolls international students every year, especially those who are interested in the study of Chinese language and culture, ocean sciences, agriculture, economics, engineering and management. The goal is to bring together a freshman class marked not only by its exceptional academic ability but also by a variety of backgrounds, particular interests, accomplishments and aspirations.
The admission staff treats each application carefully, evaluating personal as well as intellectual qualities, and making every effort to be thorough, sensitive and fair. In evaluating candidates, the admission staff seeks to understand how they have excelled within the context of their respective schools and communities, asking how well they have made use of the resources at their disposal. Ultimately, admission is offered to those students who are expected to best take advantage of the educational opportunities at GDOU and contribute in many ways to the GDOU community.
- Within 7 days after the arrival of the applicant's application package, the admission staff reads the application form and all the supporting documents enclosed. If no necessary materials are missing, incomplete and untrue, Evaluation shall be made appropriately. If it happens that necessary materials are missing, incomplete or untrue, the admission staff shall notify the applicant and remind him or her to re-send a package that meets the requirements for admission.
- When decisions are made on the admission, the foreign Affairs Office shall fill out the Visa Application for Study in China form (JW202) for the applicant to be admitted to Guangdong Ocean University and send to the Education Department of the People's Government of Guangdong Province for approval. This might take 20 days or so.
- When the Visa Application is approved and issued, GDOU shall immediately send it to the applicant with the GDOU Admission Notice.
- When the Visa Application form and the GDOU Admission Notice are received, the applicant takes them with other documents required to the Chinese Embassy or Consulate General to apply for the Student (entry) Visa.

- Right after the Student Visa arrives and the air ticket has been booked, the applicants admitted GDOU as a freshman inform the International Students Service by fax or email about where and when to be met, getting ready all the things needed to live and study at GDOU and making sure of arrival at the given time as scheduled on the Admission Notice.
- Within two days after accommodations, the new students download the International Student Information Form in the International Students page on our website, fill it out clearly and precisely, and hand it in to the International Students Service.
- Within 5 days after the entry into China, guided by the staff of the International Students Service, the new students go in turn through registration procedures in the Financial Department, the Dean's Office, the Faculty admitted to, and the Library.
- Within 15 days after the entrance to China, the new students are led to the Zhanjiang Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, the People's Republic of China for a physical examination, and then to the Zhanjiang Public Security Bureau with all the necessary documents to apply for the Residential Permit. (If the Certificate of Health Examination is refused to be issued for some reasons, the student(s) shall pitifully be sent back home.)
- With all the above procedures done as required, the new students are supposed to select courses and may register in the International Student Union for the membership of the association(s) they are interested in.
