
The Faculty of Arts has designed this special program directly to meet the needs of international students for their study of the Chinese language and culture as an academic or professional goal. The program requires a study period of four academic years. Each academic year runs from early September to early July, consisting of two semesters, with exam periods in January or early February and June or early July.
Students admitted to this program are majors in the Chinese language and culture or the teaching Chinese as a foreign language (TCFL). Like other undergraduates, all students must complete a junior paper or project and a senior thesis. The substantial independent research work is conducted under the mentorship of a faculty member. After the completion of all the required courses coupled with certain optional courses, students will obtain an undergraduate diploma. If they successfully finish the independent research work and the thesis presentation, they will be awarded a bachelor degree (the Bachelor of Arts in Chinese language and culture).

In the first academic year: intensive Chinese (elementary), spoken Chinese (elementary), listening (elementary), Chinese characters, reading (elementary).
In the second academic year: intensive Chinese (intermediate), spoken Chinese (intermediate), listening (intermediate), reading for newspapers purposes (intermediate), writing (secondary), translation (between English, Chinese and Japanese), Old Chinese.
In the third academic year: intensive Chinese (advanced), Reading for newspapers purposes (advanced), translation (between English, Chinese and Japanese), Old Chinese, ancient Chinese literature, modern Chinese literature, contemporary Chinese literature.
In the fourth academic year: advanced Chinese, reading (advance), advanced spoken Chinese, translation (between English and Chinese), Old Chinese, ancient Chinese literature.
Optional Courses: Chinese Culture, introduction to Chinese characters, Chinese vocabulary, Chinese grammar, Chinese calligraphy and fine arts, Chinese food, China operas, Chinese martial art (Chinese Gong Fu or Wushu).
At GDOU, Chinese is the language of instruction. Candidates must be able to communicate competently in Chinese both orally and in writing. And students whose first language is not Chinese, may be required to present the result of the HSK, Band 3 or Band 6.
This Chinese for University Purposes program is properly designed for prospective international students who choose to study at Guangdong Ocean University for a bachelor's or master's degree but do not meet the Chinese proficiency requirements. The normal period of study is one year (two semesters), with no constriction on the commencement. Courses offered include pronunciation, sentence pattern, listening, Speaking, Chinese characters, vocabulary, writing (elementary & intermediate), intensive reading, extensive reading, fast reading, and Chinese for Specific Purposes (optional).
Completion of this full-time, non-credit Chinese for University Purposes (CUP) program allows students to gain Chinese language proficiency before starting their degree program. Applicants may be given admission based on successful completion of this program. They may also choose to or be required to sign up for the HSK Band 3 or Band 6 to meet the Chinese proficiency requirement. Preparations for the exam will be well made under the guidance and aidance of the responsible Chinese teachers. Results show that almost every participant can pass the HSK exam after successful completion of this CUP program.

Anyone who is interested in Chinese language and culture, regardless of his origin and belief, can appropriately pursue this program for an academic or professional purpose or others. The period of study is up to the candidates. Courses are offered on a Fall-Session, Winter-Session, Intersession, and One-Academic-Year basis, covering the general knowledge and basic skills of the Chinese language and culture.

We have established good relationship with quite a few overseas higher institutions, and we hope that more foreign universities and colleges will become Sister or Partner Universities of ours.
This cooperative program is designated for exchange students in the way that our students are sent to the Sister or Partner University to pick up English or other languages, and students of the Sister or Partner University are sent to our university to study the Chinese language and culture for the purpose of Chinese studies.
Course design, fees and other aspects related shall be settled according to the exact contract or agreement signed between the partners.
