
Guangdong Ocean University (GDOU), formerly Zhanjiang Ocean University, is located in Zhanjiang City, Guangdong Province, the People's Republic of China. It has a total area of 345 hectares with four campuses: the Main Campus, Xiashan Campus, Haibin Campus and Cunjin Campus. The Main Campus is situated in the suburb of the city, next to Huguangyan, the worldwide famous global geological park and within 20-minute drive from the Xiashan Campus which is situated in the city's Business Downtown. The Haibin Campus is also situated downtown in the Xiashan District. Cunjin Campus is located downtown in the Chikan District.
GDOU is about 500 kilometers away from Guangzhou, the capital city of Guangdong Province, taking only 45 minutes by air, 5 hours by bus, and about 1 hour and a half from Hong Kong by air.

GOU is well known for its research strengths in the ocean sciences, agriculture, engineering, navigation, economics, WTO, etc. There are 34 research institutes and three provincial institutions: Guangdong Province Center for Ocean Development and research, Guangdong Province Leader Training Base for Inshore Cities & Counties, and the Provincial Demonstration Base for Ocean Thriving on Science and Technology). Current research programs sponsored by the state, province, city, and other organizations amount up to 350 projects, with a total fund of 33.5 million RMB. Some areas of note are as follows:

40 laboratories available now for students and researchers, including 5 province-level key laboratories, which are for modern biochemistry, marine medication research and development, computer network technology (information technology), etiology and epidemiology of aquatic economic animals, computer control and communications respectively. In addition, GOU has an aquatic life museum and other inside and outside bases for teaching, fieldwork and research.

5 libraries: 2 on the Main Campus, the others on the Xiashan Campus, the Haibin Campus and Cunjin Campus separately, with a total collection of 1.5 million.
