as subordinated disciplines. In addition to its main task of providing
college-degree education, ZOU also offers postgraduate degree and PH.D courses. The
applied sciences specialities are the dominant disciplines, while the basic

At all times, ZOU has paid great attention to scientific research. A great many of the university's sci-tech research achievements have been applied and disseminated, and fine economic returns,as well as social benefits, have been obtained in the propagation of new technologies in pearl culture, fish and shrimp seedling and farming , and netcage culture. Futhermore, new methods of prevention and cure of fish diseases have been developed and breakthroughs in rice hybridization and the cultivation of fast-growing, high-quality strains of bananas have been reached.
Over the years, ZOU has successfully established academic exchanges with several foreign countries such as the USA, Japan and Australia and with the regions fo Taiwan, Hongkong and Macao. World-renowned scientists like Niu Manjiang, the Chinese-American biologist, Prof. Liu Jiangkang of the Institute of Aquatic Products under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Prof. Suyama Michizo, the famous Japanese aquaculture specialist, have been engaged as emeritus professors of ZOU.
Last but not least, ZOU has formulated its own
guidelines for academic development;1.give priority to the establishment of
academic courses; 2.choose as main task the formation of a strong contingent of
highly qualified teachers and 3.adhere firmly to
the policy of educational and academic excellence. To realize these lofty aims.
ZOU strives to invite talents in a wide variety of fields to come and work for
the university. A Board of Trustees has been established so as to draw fully on
the experience of those far-sighted members of society who are sympathetic to
the cause of marine sciences and education, and not only willing to promote the
gradual expansion of ZOU, but also prepared to support whole-heartedly the
process of continual upgrading of the quality of teaching and research and the
propagation and economic and social application of research findings.
